Our new season welcomes back Carlos Acosta CBE in On Before, a Norwich Theatre & Valid Productions co-production by arrangement with Como No. Carlos Acosta is one of the greatest modern-day stars of the dance world.
After its sell-out success in Norwich and on tour around the UK last year, this amazing performance returns to Norwich Theatre Royal on 29 – 30 July, before we takes the show on tour in Europe this summer.
This show is our first-ever international touring production. It is a continuation of our ambition to originate and produce small and large-scale work itself as well as working in new ways with regional peers.
Stephen Crocker, Chief Executive & Creative Director of Norwich Theatre, said:
“We are thrilled to welcome Carlos back after his triumphant run last summer. It is always joyous and inspirational to work with Carlos. This project feels very special, not only because of the show itself and its representation of diversity but also the spirit of bravery, determination, and commitment to dance that has brought us together with Carlos again.
“For Norwich Theatre, the tour last year marked our first ever touring production. This time we are going a step further by taking the show international. We are hugely grateful to Carlos and Valid Productions for their support and trust as we begin this journey.”
First conceived by Carlos Acosta in 2010, On Before is an intensely personal evening of dance created, directed and performed by the legendary Cuban dancer. The performance sees him dance a full-length show which pays homage to his late mother and the most personal work he has ever created.
It features choreography by world-renowned artists, including Russell Maliphant, Kim Brandstrup and Will Tuckett, alongside Carlos’ choreography. The show sees Carlos Acosta perform as both a soloist and alongside Laura Rodriguez, a founding member of his Cuban dance company, Acosta Danza.
On Before is a powerful story of a doomed relationship between a man and a woman. Set to a diverse musical repertoire ranging from Handel to contemporary Cuban composer Omar Puente and culminating in a moving finale featuring a live choir performing Morten Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium.
Carlos Acosta, CBE, said:
“On Before is one of the most special shows I have ever created or danced and holds a place in my heart like no other. I have received incredible support from audiences and venues around the UK over many years, and I know how difficult the past year has been for them and our whole sector. I am thrilled to be sharing this show that is personally so important to me with them and to work in partnership again with Norwich Theatre in a shared act of resilience and optimism.”
