The Young Company puts young people at the centre of the creative process to produce vibrant, innovative, and creative theatre.

Our courses offer significant personal and educational benefits. They help to develop self-esteem and improve communication and team-work skills in a professional, creative and nurturing environment. In addition to the courses below, Young Company members are  also offered opportunities to audition for additional performances throughout the year, take part in extra workshops led by touring companies, have access to backstage tours, theatre trips and reduced ticket prices.

Modern Musical Theatre

Led by industry professionals, this course focuses on building strong foundations, improving skills, and providing quality experiences in the three key disciplines of acting, singing and dancing. Through this course members will master the techniques required to be a musical theatre performer in the 21st Century, culminating in public performances across our three stages.  This year, Juniors (8-12yrs) are preparing for a member showcase at the Playhouse and Seniors (13-19yrs) will get the chance to perform in a full scale musical of West Side Story on the Theatre Royal stage in July.

We are not currently accepting applications for this course. Please keep an eye on our website for information on applications for 2020-2021.

Backstage Tech & Design

Our Backstage courses are designed to give members the opportunity to be introduced to different professions backstage. Working with our creative and tech teams, Backstage Tech offers experience in stage management, lighting and sound; whilst Backstage Design explores roles such as set design and creation, props, costume and makeup. No previous experience is necessary.

Young Actors

Written and delivered by industry professionals, our tailor-made, age appropriate syllabus offers specialised training in drama. We have close relationships with major national companies including the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Where appropriate, this enables us to access additional high quality training opportunities for our members during the year.

The Introductory Young Actors course focuses on creative play, theatre games, exercises and role play to build confidence and creativity.  At the end of the Introductory course, members will progress onto the Junior and then Senior Young Actors programmes which explore and develop specific acting techniques including vocal work, devising text, ensemble, physicality and character.

We believe that quality training and experience is crucial for those wishing to enter the industry. This is why both within and alongside our courses there are always performance opportunities across our three stages. Collaborating across all art forms and being aware of the different roles involved in producing productions is fundamental to our young people’s knowledge when entering the industry today.

The Ensemble

Both fun and dynamic, this course aims to create a physical language that tells stories through gesture, high-energy movement and expressive communication. With an emphasis on devising ensemble at its core, members will learn about movement, physical theatre, neutral mask, commedia and image-making. By the end of the course, members will have created visually stunning, original and surprising performances.

Trinity Performance Exam Courses

Trinity College London is a leading international examinations board. It specialises in communicative and performance skills including music, drama and combined arts. At its heart is a belief that effective communication and performance skills are life enhancing, know no boundaries and should be within reach of us all.

Students on this course will work in small groups for ten weeks towards an appropriate level performance examination. At the end of the term, they will be assessed by friendly examiners who themselves work within the industry, and will be given feedback and their grade on the same day.
