Breakin' Convention 2023 Film Screening: Style Wars
This event is in the past
Free film screening, panel discussion and ‘Localism’ exhibition launch as part of Breakin’ Conventions 2023
“The Holy Grail of hip-hop movies.”

Style Wars embraces the spirit of hip-hop as it exploded into the world from underground tunnels, uptown streets, clubs and playgrounds. New York’s legendary kings of graffiti own a special place in the hip-hop pantheon. This film is regarded by many as the definitive document of the emerging hip-hop culture and the continuing struggle to keep its authentic spirit alive.
There will also be a screening of Breakin’ Convention: 20 Years Strong (approx. 7 min). In 2004, hip hop theatre pioneer Jonzi D set his mind to creating a festival that would become the powerhouse behind a hip hop dance theatre revolution. 20 years (and festivals) later Breakin’ Convention is still going strong, accelerating the careers of now iconic names in hip hop and inspiring future generations of artists and fans.
Journey through Breakin’ Convention’s 20 year history and look back on unforgettable festival performances, from killer krump, to powerful popping and boss-level breaking. Experience how the sounds of hip hop have evolved over the years with a bespoke soundtrack by music producer Jammz.
Film screenings to be followed by panel discussion, and private view of Localism, an exhibition exploring Norwich’s relationship with Hip-Hop culture, presenting snapshots from the subcultures of Hip Hop and Graffiti Writing in Norwich.
The city has always had a flourishing culture that reaches local, national and international stages through DJ’s, Emcees, Breakers and Graffiti Writers, and this exhibition provides a brief look into this world.
Breakin’ Convention will be at Norwich Theatre Royal on 27 May 2023
