Launching the UEA Green Film Festival!

“This film is an endeavour to consider cows. To move us closer to them. To see both their beauty and the challenge of their lives. Not in a romantic way but in a real way. It’s a film about one dairy cow’s reality and acknowledging her great service to us. When I look at Luma, our cow, I see the whole world in her.” – Andrea Arnold

Academy Award-winning director Andrea Arnold (American Honey, Fish Tank) unflinchingly chronicles the details of Luma’s daily life, from grazing in green fields to giving birth, making milk and everything in between. This intimate portrait ranks Luma among Arnold’s iconic collection of formidable female characters, battling the restrictive structures in which they live.

Raw and deceptively straightforward, Arnold’s latest utilises her characteristic realism to  pinpoint the impact of humanity’s relationship with, and reliance on, other animals.

The UEA Green Film Festival (GFF) is an annual four-day celebration of environmental films and filmmakers from around the world. They screen films with Q&A’s and guest speakers, run creative workshops and host a market day with the aim of creating spaces of dialogue, information exchange and community support. Their events take place in locations in Norwich city centre and at the UEA campus. All are open to the public and are free to attend.

The 2023 GFF engages the ‘spirit of the time’ (Hegel) through films that foreground powerful movements of environmental resistance, activism and change, particularly as these affect womxn, non-humans, young people and indigenous communities.
