Every Tuesday, join our creative writing courses to get your creative juices flowing. From stand-up comedy to poetry, from song writing to spoken word, our writing courses are suitable for all to enjoy in the comfort of their home.

Tue 13 Apr – Stand-Up Comedy with Nelson Gombakomba

Join Nelson Gombakomba as he gives a workshop on joke writing, the psychology behind being funny, and why everyone should try stand up comedy. Take a look at how comedians generate material and tips on how you can adopt their methods and start your own comedy journey.

Nelson Gombakomba is based in Norwich and has performed all over the country. He has over two hundred gigs under his belt, including performances at some of the country’s most prestigious comedy clubs.

Tue 20 Apr –  Writing for Screen with Henrietta Hardy

Always wanted to write for the screen?  Not sure how?  This practical workshop about writing for television will include – developing characters and structure, generating and shaping story ideas and some industry dos and don’ts.

Henrietta Hardy is an experienced television writer whose credits include multiple episodes of BBC Doctors, Casualty and The Bill.  She has an MA in ‘Screenwriting’ from the Northern Film School and has developed projects with various companies including Kudos and World Productions and is currently working with Marilla Pictures.

Tue 27 Apr – Poetry with Poppy Stevens

This relaxed, low pressure workshop is designed for anyone with a curiosity for poetry. Whether this is your very first workshop or your hundredth. Get your creative brains energised through some gentle writing exercises and have a go at writing your own poems using what is around us as inspiration. By the end of this workshop you will be equipped with several exercises, and a confidence to harness your poetic curiosity outside of this session.

Poppy Stevens is a poet, actor and community artist. Her writing has been commissioned by the National Centre for Writing and The Young Norfolk Arts Trust, TOAST Poetry, and BBC Radio Norfolk.  Poppy works within the community delivering drama and creative writing workshops to a diverse range of people. She strongly believes that poetry is for everyone and as such writes in an inclusive, engaging way, often writing about universal human experiences.

Tue 4 May – Spoken Word with James McDermott

In this workshop, participants will learn tools and techniques to help them write, rewrite and perform spoken word. Topics covered will include rhythm, rhyme, metaphor and structure.

James McDermott known for his spoken word poetry collection ‘Manatomy’ published by Burning Eye Books. James has performed their poetry all over the country and they were shortlisted for Outspoken’s Prize for Performance Poetry 2020.

Tue 11 May – Song Writing with Tessa Wingate

During this workshop participants will collaboratively create new songs. Topics that will be explored include finding subject matter, rhyme, metaphor, song structure, and methods for approaching song writing. Initially focussing on lyric writing the group will create new lyrics for an existing song, then will move on to create a completely new work. No previous music experience necessary.

Tessa is a folk musician, music therapist and community musician. She works with various organisations in Norfolk including Creative Arts East, Musical Keys and Norfolk County Council to bring accessible and positive musical experiences to all.

Workshops will be delivered online via ZOOM. Participants will be contacted 24 hrs before the session via email with a link to the session. No previous experience necessary.
