A Norwich Theatre Production

In 90 panto-minutes, Barry, The Sheriff of Norwich will turn Norfolk into a holiday resort for the mega rich, deporting everyone who lives in Norfolk to Suffolk. With the help of Maid MarionDrag Queen Dame Stratton Strawless and the Merry Non-Binaries, the only person who can stop him is Robin Good – a vegan, queer, socialist, social media influencer.

“Growing up gay in the 90s I felt quite invisible because I didn’t see myself in popular culture, except for in pantomime. Panto’s have such a queer sub-text, you’ve got a man playing a mum in the shape of a Dame, the principal boy is often played by a girl who falls in love with a princess and they kiss and get married. So, I knew if I ever had the chance to write a pantomime, I’d want to turn up that queer sub-text and make it text. I wanted to show that the boy getting the girl isn’t the only happy ever after; the queer person can get the queer person.

At the moment, I think we’re living in pantomime politics – we’re living in a time full of baddies and villains and so this felt like the perfect forum to satirise current politics, on both the left and the right. I wanted to create a space in which we could laugh together at what’s going on in the hope that it makes us a little bit more bulletproof.” – James McDermott, writer of Robin Good (Rubber Ring, CAMP, Time and Tide).

Robin Good is a potently political and wilfully woke Pantomime full of satire and local humour celebrating diversity, community and the enduring triumph of right over wrong.
