Are you ready to dive in?

“Swimming Home plays with the liminal, with the gap between imagination and reality, and urges you to let go and float away. It pays off: when you are finally allowed to submerge and dip your head under the water, it is oddly exhilarating.”

The Stage

Immerse yourself in an aquatic and sonic world, in a private meditation that takes place in your own bathroom.

Swimming Home is about the bliss of floating, the terror of sinking and the natural attraction to water which connects us all. It’s a journey from private to public, from intimate to communal, which unfurls like a floating newspaper, in this digital meditation. The ordinary becomes fantastic, your home becomes a film set and the bathtub or shower turns into a deep swimming pool at the bottom of which we sit quietly.

Written following interviews with swimmers, swimming coaches and water lovers from all over the UK, the piece mixes the ordinary and the fictional worlds to play with your perception of time and space, and putting you at the centre of the action. A piece of autoteatro – where you perform the piece yourself following simple audio instructions, Swimming Home invites you to reconsider your relationship with water and the environment around you, transforming it through sound.

How do I experience Swimming Home?: The show is a personal digital theatrical experience, and the stage is your bathroom.

You will need:

  • Mercurious NET (National Ear Theatre): To download this app, which turns the everyday world into a stage. Download the App here.
  • Equipment: Your bathroom, your phone with the app (charged preferably), a good pair of headphones and a stable internet connection. Follow the instructions, tune in and you’ll be ready to become the main character inside of tightly choreographed stories. Bath or shower? You can choose between the bath or shower versions of the show.
  • Clothing: A swimsuit, goggles (if you have them), a towel.

Don’t worry, your phone and headphones don’t go near the water.
