Carlos Acosta’s Cuban twist on the timeless ballet classic The Nutcracker,  is coming home to Norwich Theatre Royal on 10 – 11 Feb. Here is why this amazing show is must-see:

Choreographed by Carlos Acosta

This show has been choreographed and directed by dance superstar Carlos Acosta. A world-renowned dancer who has performed with companies across the globe, including 17 years with The Royal Ballet, Carlos has choreographed previous productions, including Carmen and Don Quixote and felt The Nutcracker was ideal for reinvention.

In this version, Carlos takes the classic story to his home country Cuba. Performed by 20 dancers from Carlos’ Havana-based company Acosta Danza, the production retains the classic story of a young girl transported to a magic world while incorporating the culture, history and music of Carlos’ home country of Cuba.

Cuban Heat

Carlos Acosta has brought on a twist to the classic ballet The Nutcracker. While created in the 1800s, set in snowy Germany on Christmas Eve, to Tchaikovsky’s score, Acosta has refreshed the story for this production of Nutcracker in Havana. Drawing on his Cuban roots, the ballet has been set in Havana, as we join Clara and her family on Christmas Eve. The beer cans are on the tree, and the heat is undeniable. While Acosta kept the original core of the beloved fairytale, the story has been enriched with his unique choreography style and classic Cuban traditions brought into the dance.

A Score Like You Have Never Heard Before

Not only has the classic story been revamped to capture the Cuban passion, but composers Pepe Gavilondo Peón and Yasel Muñoz have taken the infamous score and added a Latin American element to the music. Allowing Clara and her family to celebrate Christmas Eve the only way they know how, but still to intensify the energy as she defeats the Rat King, with her Nutcracker Prince and the Sugar Plum Fairy by her side.

Stunning Design

Expect to see dazzling costumes, vibrant lighting and sumptuous sets to enhance the Cuban energy. Clara sets off on the adventure of a lifetime. Expert designers have joined Carlos Acosta to enhance the visual impact of his choreography. And to enhance his vision, Nina Dunn and Tyler Forward are the set and video designers, with Andrew Exeter lighting up their visions, and bringing the warmth of Cuba to life on stage.

Angelo Alberto designed the incredible costumes. Having worked on Ballets like Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet, and Othello, Angelo is ready to bring the sparkle to the stage.

Last stop

We are incredibly proud of this production as it was co-produced right here in Norwich. The co-production is the next step in our relationship between Acosta Danza and Norwich Theatre, which saw us revive Carlos’ solo show On Before.

It’s been part of Norwich Theatre’s vision to establish this venue and this city as an international destination for culture, but also a place where amazing work comes from. It is only fitting that this amazing show finishes its UK tour in its hometown.

Nutcracker In Havana is at the Norwich Theatre Royal stage from 10 – 11 Feb.
