The Norfolk & Norwich Operatic Society (NNOS) is back! Following the triumph of Les Misérables and Singin’ in the Rain last year, NNOS brings the sweepingly romantic and deeply moving Carousel to Norwich Theatre Royal this February. We went behind the scenes with leading lady Ruby Bardwell-Dix to talk about the magic of the music, the complexity of her character, and her favourite moments in this Rodgers and Hammerstein classic.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
After finishing a degree in theatre, I moved back to Norwich from London to pursue a career in baking. However, I couldn’t keep away from performing for long, and since then, I have returned to the arts. I now enjoy working on various theatre and film projects, as well as working as a medical role-player at the UEA!
Which character are you playing, and what are they like?
I am playing Julie Jordan! She is described as “quieter and deeper than a well”. She loves very fiercely and although she may seem timid, I think she is in fact the strongest person in the show. She certainly has to deal with the harshest circumstances. She’s very much a woman of her time, but I also think there is something timeless about her character, which women over the decades have always been able to relate to. She is a great character to get to play.
How did you get involved with Norwich Norfolk Operatic Society?
I first auditioned for the company in 2022 for ‘The Sound of Music’ where I was asked to understudy for Maria, as well as perform as Sister Sofia. I then went on to be a part of the Lionheart Trio in Betty Blue Eyes (2024) and was in Les Misérables last year. And now back again, now for Carousel, which I am really excited for.
How would you describe Carousel as a show to someone who has never seen it before?
‘Carousel’ is a story about complex relationships. It explores the darker elements of romance, parenthood and legacy alongside the brighter ones. All through beautiful music and choreography. There’s plenty of big, joyful musical numbers to enjoy, as well as some very intimate and meaningful moments.
What is your favourite song in the show?
I’m probably biased, but I have to say If I Loved You. The beginning of the song is so natural and conversational that I forget we are singing to each other, and it begins to feel like we are in a play rather than a musical.
How do you prepare for a show?
I’m one of those people who likes to get into costume really early! I pace around, checking and re-checking my props (probably quite annoyingly), and have everything set out and ready ahead of time so I can sit quietly and calm any nerves.
What is it like stepping on the Norwich Theatre Royal stage?
I have been enjoying shows at the Royal ever since I can remember, so it’s always thrilling to feel like I’m part of it and to stand on the same stage where I have seen so many wonderful and inspiring performers.
What is your favourite fairground ride?
I love a scary ride, so whichever one looks the MOST scary is probably the one I will end up enjoying the most!
