English Touring Opera present: The Capulets and the Montagues | 14 Mar | Norwich Theatre Royal
If you are a fan of Shakespeare then there’s plenty to love about this show, which follows the classic tale of Romeo and Juliet as told through Bellini’s 1830 Italian opera. Set in a 1960s diner nestled in Little Italy in New York City, the head of the Capulet family forbids his daughter Giulietta from marrying Romeo, a member of the rival Montagues clan. This fateful decision sets in motion a tragic chain of events that you will likely be familiar with.
Eloise Lally, Director of The Capulets and the Montagues says, ‘If you know anything about Shakespeare then expect something very different. The backdrop to this world is a culture of violence. It’s a story about a young woman escaping the roots of her very toxic family history.’
The production captures the drama and fiery politics that made this story one of the most infamous tragedies of all time. Reminiscent of Scorsese films, the striking modern visuals blended with the original Italian opera creates a compelling and passionate performance. If you love a gritty political drama, then this is a must-see. Likewise, this timeless and familiar narrative would be the perfect introduction to opera for those who have never been before!

English Touring Opera present: What Dreams May Come | 15 Mar | Norwich Theatre Stage Two

This deeply moving journey through memories and mortality will resonate with lovers of both music and literature, weaving together Shakespeare’s timeless words with the works of Purcell, Finzi and many other celebrated composers.
