Multi-award-winning local theatre company Threshold Theatre Company is sure to provide monstrous fun with its 2023 production of Young Frankenstein.

This monster musical comedy heads to the Norwich Theatre Playhouse stage from 30 May – 3 Jun. The show has a talented cast of 20, with a team of another 20 volunteers backstage/behind the scenes to bring it to life. Young Frankenstein follows Threshold Theatre Company’s NODA award nominated musical A Chorus Line in 2022.

Based on the 1974 cult classic musical comedy film written by Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder. The story follows Frederick Frankenstein, grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, who has inherited his grandfather’s estate.

With the help of hunchbacked sidekick Igor and leggy lab assistant Inga, Frederick finds himself stepping into the mad scientist’s shoes of his ancestors, exclaiming, “It’s alive!” as he brings a creature to life. Naturally, the monster escapes, and further hilarity abounds.

Speaking about the show Society Chairman Zac Sowter said: “Threshold can’t wait to welcome audiences to Transylvania this summer. Mel Brooks is famous for parody, and Young Frankenstein is the perfect mixture of horror, comedy and musical frenzy, zapping new life into the original Mary Shelley story. It will definitely keep audiences laughing from start to finish.”

The role of Frederick Frankenstein will be played by Joseph Betts, who describes the show as a “madcap musical comedy – completely timeless and the perfect parody. Just as you’ve finished laughing, there’ll be another joke to completely knock you over. There are several musical show-stoppers, but nothing brings the razzle-dazzle like the tap routine to Irving Berlin’s ‘Puttin on the Ritz’.”

Young Frankenstein is at Norwich Theatre Playhouse from 30 May – 3 Jun.
