Tell us a bit about your dance journey, how long have you been dancing with Northern Ballet?

I’ve been with Northern Ballet since 2007. It was always my dream company ever since I was a student! It was after watching a performance of ‘Wuthering Heights’ at Sadler’s Wells, and I was completely captivated – not only by the exceptional level of dancing, but the incredible story telling portrayed by everyone on stage. I joined as an apprentice and have been very lucky to have had many wonderful experiences and roles, leading up to my current position as First Soloist.

You created the role of Ygraine in 2021, what was it like working with Drew McOnie to create this ballet and this character?

I’m so happy to be revisiting this joyous role! She holds a very special place in my heart as I have a lot of wonderful memories attached to her, shared as an experience with my dear colleagues. She’s a real, romantic, dreamy role, who also has this incredible strength that we see later on in 2nd act! As we created this piece during the pandemic, it was a really different and sometimes challenging time in the studio. However, Drew McOnie being the generous and supportive choreographer he is, really encouraged us all throughout the entire process. His imagination and enthusiasm made the whole team really come together to produce something truly magical, and that we’re all very proud of! He really brought out the best in us all, both on and off stage!

Tell us about your role as Ygraine – who is she in Merlin’s world?

‘Ygraine’ is the is the Princess of the Water Kingdom. She’s a very soft, lyrical character who also has a very strong and brave side to her. We see her story unfold with ‘Uther’ – the Prince of the Sun Kingdom, and we learn that they are two star crossed lovers as the romantic thread of the ballet. Their forbidden union becomes the very reason we see the end of the war between the two kingdoms!

There are lots of strong female characters in Merlin, what your favourite moment to dance as Ygraine?

Ooooh that’s hard to choose as each scene has something so unique! However, I do especially love the choreography in her gold bathtub!

What do you think audiences should look out for in Merlin, what makes it different from other shows?

Merlin is such a fantastic production as there’s something for everyone! There’s romance, battles, bravery, illusions, puppets and magic! And above all, a beautiful message – in that what might make us different, is what makes us truly special! This ballet definitely leaves you feeling very moved but also empowered!

What are you most looking forward to about performing in Norwich? Do you have a favourite place to visit?

I love the Theatre Royal! It’s actually where I auditioned for the company, whilst they were performing here in Norwich – so it’s a very memorable place in time for me! I will always remember the theatre staff being so welcoming and kind, and they really put me at ease when I was a very nervous young student! And I still know them well to this very day!
