Norwich Theatre has introduced a new Visitor Charter, co-created with its volunteer working group, Commercial and Visitor Services teams and the Creative Assembly.

The charter sets out the organisation’s commitments to those who visit, work in or engage with its venues, alongside the behaviours it expects in return. Built around Norwich Theatre’s core values of Honesty, Kindness, Bravery, Creativity, Inclusivity and Impactfulness, it outlines both what visitors can expect from Norwich Theatre and the role everyone can play in creating a positive environment.

Welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, Norwich Theatre has developed the charter to reinforce a culture of respect, inclusion and professionalism across its relationships with audiences, artists, touring companies, contractors, suppliers and creative partners. More than a statement of expected behaviour, it provides a practical way of bringing the organisation’s values to life across its venues and activities.

The charter is intended to help ensure Norwich Theatre remains safe, welcoming, inclusive, and accessible for everyone. It also encourages people to engage with different experiences and stories with curiosity and respect.

The charter is being introduced alongside staff training and internal policies ahead of new duties under the Employment Rights Act 2025. Coming into effect at the end of October, these require employers to take reasonable steps to prevent harassment, including harassment by third parties.

James MacDonald, Head of Visitor Services at Norwich Theatre, said: “Every day, thousands of interactions take place across our theatres, café and bars, studios and front of house spaces. The Visitor Charter reflects the kind of environment we want those interactions to create: welcoming, respectful, and inclusive. It sets out the standards people can expect from Norwich Theatre, as well as the part we can all play in making our venues positive places to visit and work.”
