On Earth Day (22 Apr) – a day dedicated to increasing awareness of environmental issues and protection – Norwich Theatre is launching its Green Community Enquiry.

The Green Community Enquiry is an online survey which asks audiences across the region about how they think institutions should respond to the climate crisis, what role theatres should have, and how Norwich Theatre can make the most impact.

The Green Community Enquiry is a part of the Norwich Theatre’s year-long Creative Matters season Climate Stories, which explores the biggest issue of our time climate crisis. Questions consider what you expect a cultural organisation to be doing to tackle the climate crisis through creative work, managing buildings and running audience events.

Asher Minns, Executive Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, is a partner in the project. He said: “Understanding people’s opinions and perceptions around climate change is a key part of understanding why we are not living sustainable lives. Despite it being better for our health, our pocket, our planet. Norwich Theatre is showing leadership on climate change as one of our regions anchor institutions.”

Climate Stories uses the power of creativity and storytelling to discover different perspectives on the climate crisis from a wide range of voices. It uses performances, workshops, events and conversations to facilitate a space for people to explore and challenge their thoughts and feelings around a topic.

Stephen Crocker, Chief Executive and Creative Director of Norwich Theatre, said: “The climate conversation is an emotive one for many. Norwich Theatre aims to promote positive dialogue, welcoming people who experience these issues first hand, as well as those who are interested to find out more.

“Inspired by the Climate Stories being told, our audiences’ feelings about the climate and our desire to use creativity to influence our collective future, Norwich Theatre will also make its own commitment to sustainability, and by the end of the year we hope to share our formal Net Zero pledge.”

The results from the survey will inform Norwich Theatre’s strategy on sustainability and becoming Net Zero.

The survey is open for the whole Creative Matters: Climate Stories season over 2023 and will take less than five minutes to complete. Survey respondents will have the opportunity to be entered into a prize draw to win a £100 gift voucher to be used across Norwich Theatre’s venues.
