On International Day of Charity, Norwich Theatre is launching an opportunity for theatre lovers everywhere to Name a Seat at Norwich Theatre Royal.

Whether it’s to be at the heart of the action, to mark a special occasion or remember a loved one, Norwich Theatre’s supporters can use the magic of theatre to celebrate treasured moments by naming a seat in Norwich Theatre Royal’s auditorium with a donation from £300.

International Day of Charity was established to mobilise people around the world to help others through giving back. This International Day of Charity, Norwich Theatre is asking you to join in making a lasting impact on Norwich Theatre’s charitable mission for Creative experiences for all. By naming a seat, you’re not just supporting the arts; you’re helping to create unforgettable experiences for generations to come.

Friends and Supporters Manager, Hannah Crouch said: “Norwich Theatre is a registered charity and is not subsidised by any public sources. The generosity of our supporters is crucial to make sure we have a wide-reaching positive impact in our communities, from presenting and producing work on stage to supporting emerging local talent. Whether we are working with schools, families, refugees or in communities, creativity changes lives.”

Claire Harlow recently marked her sister Fran Harlow’s retirement from her role as a Consultant Obstetrician at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital with a named seat in the auditorium. Both life-long theatre lovers this was a perfect gift to mark this momentous occasion.

Speaking about the gift Claire said: “It’s a marking point in her life, coming to the end of one successful career and starting to do something different with her life. And the theatre clearly means a great amount to her. Fran is a volunteer steward who plans to increase her involvement now she has more time.  The theatre been a huge part of why she’s been very happy living in and around Norwich, so to me it was blindingly obvious  to put her name on a plaque and dedicate her own place that embodies the fact she’s part of Norwich Theatre.”

When Claire visited the auditorium to reveal her surprise and for the chance to take photos, she received the response she had been hoping for: “I cried.” said Fran. “It was an enormous surprise. It had been very emotional because I’d just retired from a longstanding career of 35 years and it was given to me by my sister. It was just the most wonderful present I could have ever been given.”

Both sisters were pleased to learn that their support would help others to be able to share in the joy of creativity.

“Well isn’t that even nicer?” commented Fran, “It’s good to know that it’s being used to help the people who have less accessibility to it than we are fortunate to have.”

Talking about the new Name a Seat offering Hannah added: “We have been wowing audiences on our stages for nearly 300 years. We know Norwich Theatre Royal holds such a special place in the hearts of people of all ages and is the place where so many magical moments have been made. There’s no better way to mark that than by naming a seat, either for yourself or as a gift for a loved one and making sure those memories live on. We are so grateful to our supporters who choose to do so and the difference their donation will make for the people we engage through our creative experiences.”
