The much loved Rogers and Hammerstein musical classic The Sound of Music heads to Norwich Theatre Royal from 18 – 22 Jan 2022 with a talented cast and 24 piece orchestra. This new show follows their successful production of Made in Dagenham in 2020.
The musical follows an enthusiastic postulant nun who serves as governess to the seven children of Captain von Trapp, bringing music, joy, and love to the household. However, as Austria becomes a part of the Third Reich, the von Trapp family makes a thrilling escape to freedom.
This timeless classic is packed with all your favourite tunes you know and love! Songs like Do-Re-Mi, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, My Favourite Things, Sixteen Going on Seventeen and Edelweiss that will captivate the whole family and have you singing aloud!
Michelle Unstead, who plays Maria, returning for her fourth year with Norwich and Norfolk Operatic Society, said: “The Sound of Music is a timeless classic which holds fond memories shared by so many of us; young and old.
Featuring some of the most delightfully infectious songs of all time, it’s a combination of self-discovery and love through one of history’s most challenging times. It may also pack a few surprises for our Norwich Theatre Royal audience.

Chris Cuming, who directs the production, said, “The Sound of Music is such an iconic musical loved and known by so many. This makes my job as the Director a little easier as your audience has an idea of what they’re watching.
We wanted to ensure that audiences get the full visual of the movie and transport them to some of those stunning locations. Video designer Sam Jeffs and I have been able to do just that whilst also hitting on some of the darker aspects of the show.
Nowhere in theatre do you get to hear The Sound of Music played by a 24 piece orchestra anymore, so it’s fully worth a visit to the Norwich Theatre Royal.”
With its revitalised direction and choreography by Chris Cuming (Top Hat, Guys and Dolls, Made in Dagenham and Norwich Theatre Playhouse’s Politico Panto Robin Good), this production of The Sound of Music will delight new audiences and bring a massive dose of nostalgia to its greatest fans.
