To celebrate International Women’s Day, Norwich Theatre is opening the doors to Norwich Theatre Stage Two for a building-wide multi-sensory free event for Visble Woman (7 – 8 Mar), celebrating women who are actively changing the face of local culture.
Local artists and creatives are responding to their personal journeys and stories of transformation, reinvention, and identity to inform, ignite, and inspire. The building will come to life in an immersive event with performances and talks with artists, writers, and other performers.
Visible Woman offers visitors a relaxed, social environment. Come with your friends, grab a drink, explore multi-sensory responses and celebrate the cultural achievements of women as you move through the building. Come face to face with the artists, performers and creatives behind the work. Immerse yourself in the exhibition, listen to a talk or engage in open discussions and champion unheard voices and the power of women.
Miche Montague, Creative Communities Producer at Norwich Theatre, said: “It has been so exciting watching the development of this joyful, ambitious installation celebrating female creativity and collaboration. Discussions have made me laugh, think and reflect on the role women play in the creative world.
“We live in an increasingly ageist society. Women are often overlooked and become irrelevant. When you have no currency, you become invisible. I see this event as both an endorsement and celebration of the brilliance of women’s creativity.”
In Studio One, you can immerse yourself in the Wise, Bold, Visible Woman exhibition, created through the integration of image and story. Multimedia artist Helen Wells is leading this project, which is part of Norwich Theatre’s Theatre Makers Elders Programme.
On Saturday in Studio One, you could also participate in a piece of performance art: As you enter the exhibition, your witnessing will trigger stories and performance, making you visible and inviting you to be part of the picture.
Helen shared a little about the Wise, Bold, Visible Woman project:
“What emerged [from the project] are stories and images of resistance and visibility, of individuality and community, which we share with you at this event.”
There will be a mixture of talks and creative development sharings in Studio Two, including Samia, who will talk about her personal and powerful journey to Freedom through art. Samia will be joined by Anne Tiburtius, dancer and choreographer, who will share how Bharatanatyam – a classical form of dance from Southern India – is inextricably rooted in gender and caste violence and how women in the hereditary dance and music community were made invisible.
You can join us in Studio 3 to listen to songs by Samia Malik, which includes Samia’s work with a women’s group of refugees and asylum seekers from the People from Abroad Team.
Visible Woman is on between 7 Mar at 6-9pm and 8 Mar at 12-4pm. It is completely free to attend and can be explored at your own pace.
