A new survey by Norwich Theatre reveals what we already suspected: watching a pantomime makes people happier! And this Christmas, Norwich Theatre is set to sprinkle that happiness across Norwich and Norfolk with its pantomime Cinderella full of laughter, magic, and heart.
The study found that 80% of people felt happier after watching a pantomime, and 85% consider a trip to the panto an essential part of their Christmas celebrations. For half of all respondents, it’s the absolute highlight of the festive season.
This year, Norwich Theatre’s all-new production of Cinderella promises to deliver exactly that an unforgettable, joy-filled experience for all ages. With its glittering sets, laugh-out-loud comedy, and dazzling dance numbers, Cinderella brings together everything audiences love most about panto.
Wendy Ellis, Creative Programmes Director and Executive Producer of Cinderella, said: “Panto, with all its colour, music, and humour, brightens even the darkest winter days, it’s no wonder people leave feeling happier.
“Cinderella is a story full of hope and dreams coming true everything Christmas should be about. When families come together to laugh, sing, and share that joy, it reminds us why panto is so powerful.”
Starring Joe Tracini and Danny Hatchard, both passionate advocates for mental health awareness, Cinderella goes beyond festive fun. Their shared commitment to wellbeing and connection is woven through this year’s show, reminding audiences that even in challenging times, laughter and togetherness can make all the difference.
“In my experience (and I’ve got some), the magic of pantomime doesn’t happen on stage,” says Joe Tracini.
“Every year, I get to watch people of all ages put their phones down at the same time, so they can shout the same things, at the same man. Nobody’s thinking about what’s happening outside, they’re just enjoying the same thing at the same time. Panto gets looked down on sometimes, but when it’s done right, it gives us a break from real life and reminds us why real life is worth going back to.”
Norwich Theatre is proud to be one of the few major UK theatres that still creates and produces its own pantomime. Unlike many major venues, Norwich Theatre receives no public funding. Therefore, every ticket sold directly helps fund the theatre’s creative community work.
With Cinderella expected to generate over £6 million for the economy, the magic extends far beyond the stage.
Wendy comments: “When audiences buy a ticket, they’re not just coming to a show. They’re investing in joy, community, and creativity — and that’s what makes Cinderella so special.”
With a stellar cast, a story full of heart and humour, and a purpose that shines brighter than any glass slipper, Cinderella at Norwich Theatre is the perfect festive treat.
Cinderella opens at Norwich Theatre Royal on 6 Dec 25, and runs over Christmas and New Year until 4 Jan 26
Cinderella has a range of accessible performances, including captioned, audio described, BSL interpreted, relaxed, sensory adapted, and an over-15s performance.
