On Giving Tuesday, Norwich Theatre is launching its annual Christmas Appeal raising funds to share the transformative power of creativity with older adults across Norfolk.

The Christmas Appeal supports its Creative Ageing programme, which brings people together, improves wellbeing, and sparks new friendships through inspirational creative activities. With your help, we can make this festive season brighter for those who need it most.

The struggle against loneliness in the UK is a silent crisis. According to Age UK, over two million people in England aged 75 and older live alone. A million of those say they go over a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour, or family member.

Norfolk, with its ageing population, faces an acute challenge. Recent assessments indicate that between 5% and 13% of adults in Norfolk often or always feel lonely (Norfolk Insight).

Nik Khandpur, Assistant Director of Development & Partnerships, highlights the urgency: “Loneliness and isolation can affect us at any age; however, our ageing communities are more vulnerable as they face multiple challenges.”

“We know the connection and kindness of theatre make a real difference and can be life-changing. But often, the chance to experience creativity can be out of reach for those who need it most.”

That’s why this year’s Christmas Appeal will raise funds to expand Norwich Theatre’s Creative Ageing programme, designed for participants over the age of 50. These workshops bring multiple generations together, providing safe and engaging opportunities for people to connect, make friends, and celebrate their stories creatively.

The magic is real for participants like this Theatre Makers project attendee: “It was one of the highlights of my year and certainly improved my wellbeing. It provided me with a fantastic creative stimulus and outlet, a voice, and connections to some amazing women.”

For those in the Theatre Cares programme, a free, regular participatory music activity for people living with mild to moderate dementia and their loved ones, the sessions create a safe space to spark joy.

“These sessions are really important to me because I can see the benefit R is gaining from them. He is lifted, which lifts me. He really enjoys playing his music for other people and people appreciating that, and it’s just lovely to see him so invigorated. There are a few things now that do that.”

Your donation this Christmas can directly fund these vital moments of connection, community, and care. Every contribution helps expand activities for older people in our region that improve wellbeing, reduce isolation, and create new communities of friendship.

  • £10 can provide refreshments that help make a participatory workshop more welcoming.
  • £20 can provide free tickets so someone and their loved one can enjoy one of our shows together.
  • £35 can ensure an isolated older person has transport to join activities at the theatre and feel part of a welcoming community.
  • £80 can give someone the opportunity to share their story in a theatre-making programme, celebrating their voice and experiences.
  • £120 can support an accessible movement session, enabling people with limited mobility to take part in creativity and expression.
  • £240 can fund a full music workshop for people living with dementia and their carers, offering support and joy.

“Last year, your support was record-breaking, raising nearly £25,000 to help bring creative experiences to the community,” said Nik. “This year, help us spread the magic even further to our most vulnerable older residents.”

Norwich Theatre will collect donations at the end of each Cinderella performance and its Christmas shows at the Playhouse. You can also make a donation online now at norwichtheatre.org
