Norwich Theatre Playhouse brought you the musical Six before anyone else. You got to see My Son’s a Queer (But What Can You Do?) before it made its West End Debut. And now Cake: The Marie Antoinette PLAYlist is coming to Norwich Theatre Playhouse next week (25 – 29 Apr), and we are excited!

This show is tipped to be the next best thing, and we are telling you, you will not want to miss this one. Cake: The Marie Antoinette PLAYlist gives the notorious French Queen a modern twist in this gig musical that fuses ballet, hip-hop, pop and street dance all in one.

The show focuses on The Affair of The Diamond Necklace – an historical scandal that further damaged the famous French Queen’s reputation. But when she is implicated in a crime to defraud the crown jewellers of a diamond necklace, it is not just her reputation at stake, but the monarchy and France itself.

Fresh from her magical run as Mary Poppins on the West End, Zizi Strallen stars as Marie Antoinette, with Renée Lamb, Catherine of Aragon from the original cast of SIX, starring as Jeanne. The cast is completed by B Terry as Nicole, Travis Ross as Cardinal with Ope Sowande and Megan Bryony Gibbs as the ensemble and Lukas Hunt and Amie Hibbert  as swings.

Speaking about the show Chief Executive and Creative Director of Norwich Theatre, Stephen Crocker, said: “Norwich Theatre Playhouse has a reputation for being the place to see a show early on before it becomes the next big thing. The beloved and award-winning musical SIX had its world premiere at the venue before making its way to the West End and Broadway. My Son’s a Queer had its only regional date at the Playhouse before moving to the West End. We believe that Cake has the potential to be the next hit show and are delighted to have it visit the Playhouse in April.

“Its multi-genre pop soundtrack brings the story of Marie Antoinette in 19th century France bang up to date in a fun, feisty tale of diamonds, gossip, monarchy and reputation. This is a Parisian dance gig in one act!”

Trust us. This sweet treat might have you saying … Move over Anne Boleyn and the rest of Henry VIII’s Wives. There is a new Queen in town!
