Betty Blue Eyes is a hilarious and touching musical comedy, based on the 1984 Alan Bennett film ‘A Private Function’ with Michael Palin and Dame Maggie Smith as a Yorkshire couple struggling to make ends meet just after the war.

It is 1947, war has ended but Britain’s long-suffering citizens are suffering under the burden of food rationing, high unemployment and the coldest winter for decades.

The only bright spark on the horizon is the impending marriage of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip.  Enter Betty, an adorable pig who is being illegally reared to ensure local dignitaries of a small community in Yorkshire can celebrate the Royal Wedding with a lavish banquet whilst the local population make do with Spam.

Brilliantly adapted for the stage and with a deliciously infectious, toe-tapping, retro contemporary Stiles and Drewe score, the result is an utterly British musical, full of eccentric characters, and of course, our star, Betty the pig!

Betty Blue Eyes premiered in the West End in 2011, starring award winning actress Sarah Lancashire, and received nominations for ‘Best New Musical’ in the Laurence Olivier Awards, The Evening Standard Awards and the WhatsOnStage.com Awards.

The Norfolk and Norwich Operatic Society is thrilled to be bringing this feel-good musical to the stage in January 2024, with direction and choreography by Chris Cuming. (Kinky Boots, The Sound of Music, Made in Dagenham, Guys and Dolls, Top Hat)

This is an amateur production by arrangement with MTI Europe and produced by The Norfolk and Norwich Operatic Society. NNOS.CO.UK
