Ahead of the 7 May local elections, Norwich Theatre is creating a space for healthy debate about local issues and giving residents an opportunity to hear from candidates standing in the local government elections.

This event will be a panel discussion moderated by Eastern Daily Press Editor Richard Porritt, with audience members able to ask questions, facilitated by Chief Executive and Creative Director of Norwich Theatre, Stephen Crocker.

The hustings will focus on the major issues shaping the future of local government in Norfolk, including government reorganisation and the introduction of a new regional mayor, economic development and communities, and the role of arts, culture and creative industries in local growth and place-making.

Who will be invited?

We have invited representatives from all major parties standing in the Norfolk County Council elections. The panel discussion will be moderated by Richard Porritt, editor of the Eastern Daily Press, and facilitated by Stephen Crocker, Chief Executive and Creative Director of Norwich Theatre.

Why are hustings being held at Norwich Theatre?

Theatres have always been places where communities come together to listen, debate, and imagine something better. As one of Norfolk’s most significant cultural institutions, we believe we have a duty to open our doors to the wider community as the region prepares for local government reorganisation and the introduction of a new regional mayor. Hosting this hustings is an extension of our mission to serve Norfolk’s communities.

How do people submit a question?

The moderators will prepare a number of questions to put to the panel to begin the debate. There will be an opportunity for audience members to put their own questions to the panel directly, facilitated by Stephen Crocker, Chief Executive of Norwich Theatre.

Will there be an order of topics covered?

The discussion will focus on the major issues shaping the future of local government in Norfolk, including local government reorganisation and the introduction of a regional mayor; economic development; transport and connectivity; adult and children’s services; and the role of arts, culture and creative industries in local growth. While the evening will follow a broad structure, the moderator may adapt the flow of discussion in response to audience questions and the debate on the night.

Will there be a break?

No, the event will run from 6 pm to 8 pm.

Are there age restrictions?

The event is open to those aged 16 and over.

What is the expected behaviour at the hustings?

We want this to be a welcoming and constructive evening for everyone. We ask all attendees to treat candidates, audience members, and the moderators with respect throughout the event. Interruptions or disruptive behaviour will not be tolerated. This is an opportunity to engage in open, civil debate.
