Are you a part of the local business community and looking to make a positive impact through your work?

Paying it Forward in Business focuses on the power of kindness in business, and explores what it truly means to “pay it forward” in our community and how to create environments for your people to thrive.

Through inspiring panel conversations, Q&A and networking, you will take away actionable insights, inspiration and ideas to  implement within your own business.

The panel discussions will focus on the three key areas of Business, People, and Community.

Running time: 9am - 2pm

Ticket price includes tea and coffee throughout the event. The proceeds will directly contribute to our charitable mission of creating creative opportunities for our community.

Don’t forget to visit our Kindness Wall during the event (details below). You will also see sculpture artist Chris Jackson at work on a new kindness-inspired installation.

The key learnings from each panel will be captured by live drawing and shared after the event.

The Playhouse has plenty of working space and free WiFi should you need to attend to any urgent business during the event.

Kindness Wall

At the event, there will be a Kindness Wall where attendees can pass on the power of kindness in the community. Donations can be made for items listed on the wall, such as tea and cake at Café Royal, a donation to our Christmas Appeal, a family ticket to the panto, and more. All donations will benefit individuals and families within our local community through our charitable work and partners.

About our speakers

Aimee Konieczny

Aimee is the Commercial Director and Co-owner of Indigo Swan, an award-winning energy consultancy that values integrity over profit. She educates employees, customers, and business connections on sustainability to help reduce carbon emissions and achieve Net Zero.

 

 

Andrew Dernie

Andrew leads Aviva’s Place Programme, focusing on sustainable community building. He supports community-focused businesses, chairs the Norwich Town Deal Board, and is involved with the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce and BITC.

Gemma Crane

Gemma, Managing Director of Mindset-HR, aims to transform workplace culture, employee behaviour, and business outcomes. She mentors local business leaders through the Norfolk Chambers’ Co.next program, focusing on coaching, HR best practices, and supporting the transition from education to employment.

Gordon Simpson

Gordon is a Partner in Dispute Resolution at Howes Percival, helping resolve business disputes for corporate clients and individuals. He hosts the Howes Percival Business Breakfast and leads the Cornerstone Employer initiative, supporting Norwich schools with careers education.

Harry Harris

Harry has extensive experience in business, from starting and running his own companies to leadership roles in large manufacturing organisations. His training organisation identifies skills gaps and training needs for businesses of all sizes.

Laura McGillivray MBE

Laura  served as Chief Executive of Norwich City Council for 14 years, transforming it from a struggling council to a well-respected partner in the city and region. She championed arts and culture, led the development of the 2040 Norwich City vision, and received an MBE and honorary degree for her contributions.

Michael Yates

Michael is the sustainability lead and project coordinator at Norwich Business Improvement. He has developed partnerships in retail crime, net-zero, and placemaking, including collaborations for Love Light Norwich and Upcycle Your Waste, contributing to a supportive community in Norwich.

Nigel Cushion

Nigel works nationally in leadership development and performance improvement. He founded Nelson spirit, a social impact business that mentors Norfolk business and community leaders and provides opportunities for young people through internships and funding.

Pippa Lain-Smith

Pippa founded Plain Speaking PR in 2006 after a diverse PR career across sectors from manufacturing to not-for-profits. She champions genuine corporate social responsibility, emphasising #PRforGood to build honest, positive relationships and strong reputations for businesses.

Sham Golamy

Sham is the Corporate Partnership Manager for Broadland and South Norfolk Councils, creating opportunities that support social and environmental causes. His work benefits both the community and local businesses, with a focus on corporate social responsibility and sustainability.

Kay Mason Billig

Kay became the Leader of Norfolk County Council in May2023. She has over 11 years of experience as a County Councillor and was the Deputy Leader of South Norfolk District Council from 2018. Her career includes work in law, marine sciences, and international roles in Egypt and Brazil.

Paige Gouldthorpe

Paige is the Head of the Court of Protection & Vulnerable Persons Team, focusing on providing legal support to some of the most vulnerable people in society. Paige was named one of the Top 100 Inspiring Women of Norfolk, and it is her involvement in community organisations which underscores her commitment to making an impact beyond legal practise.

Rob Carter

Rob joined RG Carter in 2007, and after leading several of the subsidiaries, became joint MD in 2019. He is enormously proud of the strong family values that are the foundation of the business, placing importance on the development of long-term relationships with both clients and the supply chain.

Sarah Steed

Sarah is Norwich University of the Arts Director of Knowledge Exchange and Employability and leads on business partnerships and growing opportunities for graduates to work in Norwich. Sarah has worked across many of the regions blue chip food businesses, specialising in innovation, international business consultancy and international innovation.

Stephen Crocker

Stephen is the Chief Executive and Creative Director of Norwich Theatre, overseeing all artistic and commercial activities. He co-chairs the Dance Consortium and serves on the boards of The Touring Partnership, Norfolk & Suffolk Culture Board, Norwich BID, and Norfolk Business Board.

Tom Sleigh

Tom is the current Director of Corporate Affairs at the Bank of London and was the Non-Executive Chair of the Barbican Arts Centre from 2020 to 2024. He’s also now Chair of the Council of Goldsmiths, University of London, and Chair of the Board at Norwich Theatre.

Tracey Drake

Tracey leads a place-based approach for Business in the Communities Place Programme, uniting businesses, local authorities, and communities for inclusive progress. Her mission is to connect communities, eliminate inequality, and create opportunities for everyone.

Paying it Forward in Business is part of Norwich Theatre’s Creative Matters Season Kindness through Creativity. The season explores how creativity and the arts can inspire change, tell unheard stories, build compassion, and create a fairer and kinder society. The Kindness through Creativity season has so far featured a series of shows, take-part activities, film screenings, and half-term take-part workshops. We hope that this event will also bridge the gap between themes which transcend both art and business bringing this theme to the forefront.
