Dear England is more than just a play, it is a love letter to the beautiful game. This critically acclaimed show has kicked off its national tour, arriving at Norwich Theatre Royal between 3 – 7 Feb. Renowned journalist Clare Balding had the opportunity to sit down with writer James Graham to dive into the heart of the story.

While it centres on the England Men’s team, the play goes beyond the net exploring how hope and leadership beyond the net pitch bring the courage to be vulnerable.

The Beautiful Game

James and Clare reflect on how the play and the journey of Gareth Southgate, and how he rejuvenated the team. James is quick to reassure us that you don’t need to know the offside rule to be moved by the play; at its core, this is a study of psychology, resilience, and hope.

Psychology Changing the Game

In this clip, they talk about Womack, playing Pippa Grange, who comes in to help improve the team, and the environment they are in, with the woman who taught the squad how to talk.

The Southgate Revolution

Centering on Gareth Southgate as a protagonist, James sought to create a truly authentic portrait of modern football. This segment explores the changing landscape of elite sport, specifically the growing importance of mental health and supportive leadership.

National Pride

In this last clip, James reflects on how he came up with the idea for the play, and how he feels a sense of pride to be English, as the England team has begun to embody the new values.

Dear England is at the Norwich Theatre Royal from the 3-7 of Feb. Don’t miss out on this transformative show, blending the camaraderie of football with the spectacle of the stage.
