What a Feeling | Stepping into Alex Owens’ Leg Warmers
Get ready to kick off your Sunday shoes and pull on your leg warmers as Threshold Theatre is shimmying its way to Norwich Theatre Playhouse with Flashdance the Musical between 2 – 7 June.
We sat down with the leading lady, Sophie, to talk about stepping into the iconic role of Alex Owens, her favourite numbers, and which 80s fashion item she wants to bring back.
Tell us a bit about you.
My name is Sophie, and I’m absolutely thrilled to be playing Alex Owens in Flashdance. Alongside performing, I work as an Early Years Educator in a nursery setting and also teach musical theatre at Triple Threat Stage School.
Theatre has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up in a wonderfully theatrical family, and being surrounded by that love of performance from such an early age sparked my own passion for the stage. That passion has only continued to grow through every opportunity I’ve had to perform, teach, and share what I love with others.
Tell us a bit about the show and your character.
Flashdance is such a high-energy, feel-good show packed with some of the most iconic songs of the 1980s. Beneath the amazing soundtrack, it tells a really inspiring story about ambition, determination, and following your dreams no matter what stands in your way.
Alex Owens is an incredibly driven and resilient character with so much grit and heart. By day, she works as a welder, and by night, she performs in a nightclub, all while chasing her dream of getting into a prestigious dance school. She’s strong, passionate, and relatable, which makes her such an exciting character to bring to life on stage.
What should we expect?
Audiences can expect a fantastic night of nostalgia as we bring this iconic film to the stage. Flashdance really does have everything: powerful storytelling, huge musical numbers, emotional moments, and an unforgettable soundtrack full of classic hits. It stays true to the spirit and heart of the original film while bringing a fresh energy to the stage.
What is your favourite song in the musical?
My favourite number in the show is Chameleon Girls. I’m not actually in the number myself, but it’s a huge ensemble piece that tells such a fun story. The choreography is incredible, and it’s always one of my favourite moments to watch during rehearsals because the energy is just amazing.
Are you excited to perform at Norwich Theatre Playhouse?
Absolutely! I’ve been lucky enough to perform at the Playhouse several times over the past few years, mainly as part of the ensemble, so it’s a theatre that already means a great deal to me and holds so many wonderful memories. Taking on my first lead role there feels incredibly special, and I can’t wait to perform Flashdance on that stage.
What has been the best moment in rehearsals?
Honestly, the best part has been spending time with such a talented, supportive, and fun group of people every week.
What are your pre-show rituals?
I don’t really have any unusual pre-show rituals, but getting show-ready is definitely an important part of the process. Before each performance, we’ll do a full physical and vocal warm-up to make sure we’re feeling strong and ready for the show ahead. We also have a fight call to safely run through the fight choreography, as well as checks for lifts in some of the dance numbers so everyone feels confident and comfortable.
And of course, I’ll need to fuel (read: EAT!) because this show is full of huge dance numbers. It’s such a physically demanding production, but that’s also part of what makes it so exciting to perform.
If you could bring one fashion trend from the show into 2026, what would it be?
Definitely off-the-shoulder tops! I’ve completely fallen in love with Alex Owens’ iconic grey off-the-shoulder jumper during rehearsals, so I’d happily bring that trend straight back into fashion.
