STREE: A Double Bill
This event is in the past
New dance, inspired by ancient Indian traditions, championing female voices. Fusing the intimate and the epic, this premier of original work by Norwich company Natyapriya Dance, is by turns personal and political, delicate and defiant.
Part One
Escaping the abusive oppression of forced marriage in search of the first breath of liberation, SVATANTRA tells the story of the everywoman, within the world of South Asian culture. With music and lyrics by critically-acclaimed singer-songwriter Samia Malik, this powerful exploration journeys from darkness into light, and poses one of the most difficult questions of all… What does it take to be truly liberated?
Part Two
Exploring the idea of a ‘Mother being’, real-life Mother and daughter Anne and Dana weave an intricate, playful experience exploring the formless, ungendered, and all-pervasive, universal mother, in the joyful dance duet, SOOSHANA.
STREE has been created with the support of Norwich Theatre’s Creative Development Programme.
Natyapriya Dance Company have been delighting Norfolk audiences with classical Indian dance in the Bharatanatyam traditional since 1996. STREE sees the all-female company break new ground, as they fuse traditional forms with contemporary movement to give space to their own voices. The result will be a spellbinding and accessible evening of colourful storytelling, perfect for the intimacy of Stage Two.
