Theatre Cares - by the Sea!

What is it?

Theatre Cares brings together individuals with mild to moderate dementia and their carers/partners for engaging and participatory music workshops that spark joy, curiosity and new friendships!

This programme is designed for those living with mild to moderate dementia and their partners or carers and is not suitable for those in residential care settings attending with care home staff.

Research has proven that music improves the wellbeing of people living with dementia and can be a positive shared experience between loved ones. Join us at Norwich Theatre as we explore music in all its forms, from singing and song-writing to getting hands-on with drums, chimes, and stringed and small percussion instruments.

What will I get from taking part?

“It can be anything from interesting, entertaining, and enjoyable in the sense that you’re sharing something that other people in the room also share, that they enjoy doing. It’s a kind of reaching out to each other. That’s the value of it for me.” Previous participant.

“These sessions are really important to me because I can see the benefit that R is gaining from them. He is lifted, which lifts me, and he really enjoys playing his music for other people and people appreciating that, and it’s just lovely to see him so invigorated. There are a few things now that do that.” Previous participant.

Who will be leading the project?

Our practitioners, Tessa and Duncan, are experienced in working with those with dementia, creating a safe space for you to feel at ease and connect with your creativity. Workshops are relaxed and set to a leisurely pace, with small groups allowing for maximum contact with practitioners.

This pilot programme will take place in The Hub Café at Sheringham Little Theatre – a venue that is fully accessible, familiar and calm. The practitioners remain the same throughout the programme, meaning you get to see the same friendly face each visit and relationships can be nurtured.

Do I need any particular skills or experience to take part?

No previous music or creative experience is necessary. All instruments are provided, but if you fancy bringing along your own, then we encourage this!
